There are endings that feel nothing like endings.
Sometimes they feel like an opening—a sudden tearing away of what we thought was true, leaving us standing in the strange space between grief and liberation. We can know we have chosen ourselves and still mourn. We can feel powerful and profoundly lonely. We can grieve the illusion of what we believed we had while simultaneously recognizing how deeply supported we actually are.
The Beautiful Ache was born inside that contradiction.
Created during a week of difficult conversations, unraveling relationships and uncomfortable clarity, this piece became an open wound on paper. Wine, magenta, violet and bruised rose move through luminous washes of gold, while unexpected passages of pale light break through the center. Nothing is entirely dark. Nothing is entirely radiant. Each exists because of the other.
There is grief here, but there is also freedom.
There is the ache of realizing that something was perhaps never what we believed it to be, and the liberation that comes when we finally stop trying to make it so. There is the loneliness of choosing ourselves, alongside the startling realization that we may be more supported than we knew. There is anger, tenderness, disappointment, relief, empowerment and the quiet devastation of letting an illusion die.
Because healing isn't always a closing.
Sometimes healing is an opening.
Sometimes the wound is still tender while we are becoming freer. Sometimes our hearts break and expand at exactly the same time. Sometimes we haven't reached the part where everything makes sense yet—we are simply standing inside the raw, shimmering truth of what is.
And perhaps that is the beautiful ache of being human: that grief and gratitude, loneliness and belonging, heartbreak and liberation can all occupy the same heart.
Not healed over.
Not hidden.
Open.
