Muted is a painting about the slow disappearance of a voice—and the moment it decides to return.

There are countless ways we learn to make ourselves smaller. Sometimes it happens loudly, through criticism, dismissal or being told outright that what we have to say does not matter. More often, it happens quietly. A story interrupted. An idea overlooked. A feeling minimized. A truth rewritten by someone who finds our version inconvenient.

Over time, we begin editing ourselves before anyone else has the opportunity.

Muted was born from knowing that feeling intimately.

It holds a lifetime of feeling stifled, unheard and unseen—of having stories, ideas, feelings and meaning snuffed out by the very people whose listening mattered most. Parents. Partners. Colleagues. Even children. Layer upon layer of moments that quietly teach a person to soften their edges, lower their volume and question whether their voice deserves space at all.

Visually, Muted carries that tension between suppression and emergence.

Dusty rose, mauve, violet and weathered blue bleed and dissolve into one another, creating a dreamlike landscape where forms appear only to disappear again. Soft passages of cream interrupt the deeper color like openings—breaths, perhaps, or words finally finding somewhere to land. Throughout the composition, flashes of metallic gold refuse to be completely obscured.

And that gold feels important.

Because beneath every attempt to quiet us, something remains.

A spark. A knowing. A voice that may retreat, but never entirely disappears.

For all of its softness, Muted is not a quiet painting. It is a reclamation.

It is a reminder of who I never want to be again: silenced, diminished, dulled or made smaller for the comfort of another. It marks the boundary between the woman who learned to swallow her words and the woman who understands that her voice, her stories, her ideas and her meaning belong to her.

Never silenced.

Never quiet.

Never dull.

Muted is an original Reiki-infused mixed media work, presented matted and framed and ready to inhabit its new home. It is for the collector who has found their way back to their own voice—or perhaps the one who is only just beginning to remember how powerful that voice has always been.
